Salmon in Our City

Five species of salmon return to spawn in Campbell Creek each year, providing opportunities for observation and fishing right in the heart of Anchorage.

Catchable Coho

The most abundant salmon in Campbell Creek are coho, also known as silvers. About 3,800 coho return each year, and about 1,200 of these are caught by anglers. The Alaska Department of Fish and Game releases hatchery coho smolt each year to enhance this popular fishery.

Mighty Kings

Campbell Creek hosts an annual run of about 1,000 wild king salmon, also known as Chinook. These are the largest salmon species found in the creek and can weigh up to 30 pounds! Because the run is so small, fishing for king salmon is only open during one weekend each year, to children 15 or younger.

Creek Diversity

About 1,000 sockeye salmon spawn in Campbell Creek each year, along with fewer than 100 pink and 100 chum salmon, all of which are wild fish. Other fish found in the creek include Dolly Varden and rainbow trout.
